    Von Stroheim definitely was a character. He was actually born to a middle class Jewish family in Vienna, but created a myth about coming from an aristocratic family. His service in the military was menial as well, nothing as elaborate as he claimed. He loved this world, however, and it occupies a large part of most of the films he directed.
