Almost criminal wild pitching by Lefty Williams and highway robbery that was ultra-sensational by the Reds beat Chicago's White Sox today in the second game of the World's Series by a score of 4 to 5 and left South Side rooters nothing but hope and their underwear.

  1. Mary Mallory's avatar Mary Mallory says:

Pro athletes in baseball and football made peanuts through the 1960s. Though throwing games was illegal, many might have thought that was their only chance to make some good money in case of injury and to have something for retirement. They didn’t have Social Security or such back then, and many, like Shoeless Joe Jackson, were illiterate. There weren’t many good jobs for them when their playing days were over. Even pro football players in the 1950s had real jobs in the offseason because they couldn’t make enough to support their families with their sports salaries.
