Sept. 3, 1919: Alexander and Oviatt opens at Hill and 6th streets. By this era, some of The Times' display advertising had become quite stylish.

    Not completely true, alas.

    Alexander & Oviatt[/I] was incorporated on June 1, 1912: its founding partners were Frank Baird Alexander, James Zera Oviatt, and Frank Shaver Allen. The capital stock was $10,000, almost all of which was provided by Allen. The store itself opened for business in September, 1912.
    In short, [I]Alexander & Oviatt[/I] began its life 97 years ago.
    The advertisement is promoting [I]Alexander & Oviatt[/I]’s expansion of its second location on the corner of 6th and Hill. (They’d moved out of the first location in 1915.)
