In 1889, death from diphtheria was common. So it’s not surprising some were looking around for alternative healing. And Christian Scientists of that day were experiencing some pretty amazing spiritual healings. If the father had actually sought Christian Science help, the boy might have been saved. But he clearly didn’t understand or accept Christian Science theology. He “intimated that if it was the Lord’s will he would not complain.” But Christian Science teaches that sickness and death are never God’s will.
