I definitely remember “smog eyes” (though I have no memory of people actually calling it that). I also remember when the APCD used to issue smog predictions by saying, for example, “light to moderate eye irritation,” rather than referring to levels of actual pollutants. And boy, did it ever irritate sometimes! Owww. Blinking or keeping the eyes shut didn’t make the sensation go away, either. There was little relief except to go indoors and let your tears gradually wash the irritants out…
