Found on EBay — Selig Movie Poster, 1912

Selig Polyscope, 1912 This poster for the Selig Polyscope production of "Kings of the Forest" has been listed on EBay. I'm unable to locate any mention of this film in The Times. The vendor says that this is an original. The poster is listed as Buy It Now for 1,999.99.

(See previous listing for a poster from "The Peculiar Nature of the White Man's Burden.")

  1. All I can find is very brief mention in the Washington Post from mid April 1913 –this seems to be a wild-animal movie. The LA Times does mention that the Selig company makes a lot of these sorts of films (see for example an article in the 31 January 1913 Times, section 3/page 4, about an animal “actor,” a lion named Duke). Hope this is helpful and best regards from a friendly media historian in Boston.

Col. Selig maintained a private zoo at his Los Angeles studio. It is rumored that his star lion, by then long in the toothless, was rented to L.B. Mayer to pose for his new company’s logo. He was brought back again around 1928 for the sound version.
Could it be the future MGM lion in the poster above?

According to Internet Movie Database the film was indeed released in 1912 by the Selig Studio, starring that popular leading man of the silent era: Tom Santschi (1878-1931).
