After promoting Joe Hyams' series on Cary Grant on the front page, The Times runs a story that's mostly a denial by Grant with long quotes from the story. "I've never had an interview with Hyams on any subject. The article is completely erroneous," Grant tells The Times.

In his 1973 book Mislaid In Hollywood, Hyams claims he was vindictated when a studio publicist (who was apparently unaware of this flap) later sent Hyams a souvenir photo that had been taken when the journalist was interviewing Grant during location shooting on an Operation Petticoat press junket in Florida. If true, so much for Grant’s allegation he’d never spoken to Hyams.

Perhaps someone else can refresh my memory, but I think the Marc Eliot biography of Grant said that there was a bit of trouble publishing the first article about Hyams’ claims, so the paper made a concession by posting a denial in the same paper. It was to keep Grant and his friends happy and to not cause a fuss. Again, though, this is a fuzzy memory of a book I read 2-3 years ago, so if someone knows more, please elaborate.
