An oil derrick in the street near the Beverly Center? Who knew?
Oil was 80 cents a barrel or $11.66 USD 2007.

    Who knew about the oil derrick? EVERYBODY knew! It loomed large above the pony rides at Beverly Park and stared you right in the face when you came out of the Big Drugstore across La Cienega. Rumor has it that the derrick is still pumping away in the bowels of the Beverly Center, although I have yet to see it. It’s comforting to think that, like some mad version of Old Faithful, the well is still pumping away.

    Every kid who grew up in LA in the 1950’s and 1960’s knew that place – as well as ever divorced father in the LA Basin. That oil derrick was one of the major cultural and social landmarks of the city.
