Above, two suspects are arrested on charges of trying to rob a man at a streetcar stop in Santa Monica … Below, pay careful attention to the story about renewed efforts to excavate a tunnel on Hill Street. This is important because the hill–like the one on Broadway–no longer exists and because the account is further proof that traffic problems are nothing new: Los Angeles has been struggling with its congested streets for more than a century … Speaking of transportation, note that local auto dealers are planning to have fairs in surrounding rural towns to give farmers rides in fancy machines and emphasize the need for better roads … And there’s a banana war among produce wholesalers  (3 1/2 cents a pound is 77 cents a pound USD 2007). Retailers aren’t passing the savings on to customers, The Times says, but are keeping the profits.

  1. Richard H's avatar Richard H says:

“Boosters — Autoists for good roads”
“Automobile Dealers Association of Southern California”
“Farmers days…Cars of all makes will help the educational plan. There will be no effort to drive at breakneck speed…”
“The farmers will be driven along narrow grades, where it is almost impossible to pass teams [horse driven wagons]. The need for building better roads will be emphasized by taking them over a stretch of sand, or bumpy highways, where springs are likely to be smashed.”
This was some “educational” outing the Automobile Dealers Association planned. Why would anybody want to go?
“The need for improved roads was distressingly shown on the run to San Pedro the day the fleet arrived. Bills for expenses incurred during that drive to the sea are still pouring in. With 98 machines laid up along the highway, the benefit to be derived from improved roads…was emphasized.”
Either that or the need for better and more reliable motor vehicles less prone to breakdown.
