OK, what is our mystery photo?
- Montgomery Clift’s Chevrolet (wrecked in 1956 during the filming of "Raintree County")? Interesting guess. But no.
- Gail Russell’s Chevrolet? Good guess, but she was driving a convertible.
- Ernie Kovacs’ fatal wreck? (Two people). He was driving a Corvair station wagon.
- Judy Tyler (Elvis Presley’s co-star in "Jailhouse Rock")? Good guess. But no.
- Carl Perkins? Interesting guess. But no.
- Is it Roy Campanella’s Chevrolet? (Ken Odessky, Jerry Sondler) Absolutely. This is the car Dodger catcher Roy Campanella was driving when he was in an accident that left him partially paralyzed, Jan. 28, 1958.

Campanella wrote a wonderful book in 1959 which included the tragic event, ‘It’s Good to be Alive’. It is one of the most inspirational I have ever read.

FYI guys, Ernie Kovacs died in 1962. Lousy pic of him hanging out of his car was splashed on front pages. Thank god that practice has changed.
–The Times only published a photo of the wrecked car (a Corvair station wagon) and a mug shot of him. No body shot.
