Sheriff’s deputies finally caught up with escaped mental patient Mary
H. Andrews (alias Mary Mitchell Andrews), who vanished in November
after kidnapping her mother and a friend.
Since then, The Times said, Mary had been hiding out at a skid row
hotel and apparently living on $900 ($6,448.76 USD 2006) that she had
forced her mother to withdraw from a bank. "It was her own money," her
mother said, although this fact didn’t appear in the initial news
reports.
On a Sunday morning, Mary left skid row to worship. She sought out the
Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, 12700 Paddison Ave., Norwalk,
where the congregation was led by the Rev. Jack McFerran, whom she knew
because he sometimes held services at Patton State Hospital.
According to The Times, McFerran recognized Mary and signaled to Deputy
Bob Moore, who was in the congregation. Moore called the Norwalk
station and two deputies quickly arrived. "As Mary’s head was bowed in
prayer, they eased up beside her and took her away. She came quietly,"
The Times said.
And again, the trail runs cold. I cannot find any further stories about this woman.
Episcopal Church of the Incarnation has since been named St. Francis Church and offers services in Korean.
