Members of an infantry division fighting in Hurtgen Forest, near Zweifall, take time to open Christmas packages that have arrived from home. The battle of Hurtgen Forest lasted from September 1944 to February 1945 and is, according to military scholars, the longest single battle in U.S. Army history. (On a personal note, I have to admit some of these old pictures bring a tear to my eye, and this is one of them. The U.S. suffered heavy losses in this battle, which was waged under arduous conditions–lrh).
