Songs of the week

The picks from KWFB-AM (980), Aug. 3, 1957.

I actually recognize most of these tunes; "Old Cape Cod" and "Gold Mine in the Sky" are new to me, but at least I’ve heard of Patti Page and  Pat Boone.  Alas I can’t find a clip of Helen Grayco doing "Black Coffee"–or anything else.  Anyone care to identify  "Happy Pierre in Hi-Fi?"

Old Cape Cod was one of the huge hits of the day and has been used on the soundtracks of many films (according to wikipedia – most recently Die Hard 2).
Helen Grayco was Mrs. Spike Jones for a time and sang with the his band on some of his hits – and was quite a good singer in her own right.
In the Middle of an Island was a big hit for Tony Bennett that summer – never heard the Tennesse Ernie version – I’m going to have to try and track that down.
Don’t know much about Happy Pierre, except that he played Honky Tonk piano. I think one of the albums I have of his is him “live at Marineland”
Cool site – thanks for sharing

Mitch Reed? Could he be the (long gone) B. Mitchell Reed of KMET FM fame?
–You’ve got me there. Maybe someone will write in!

Mitch Reed became BMR when KFWB went top 40 with Color Radio on Jan. 1, 58 with Jarvis, Ballance and new DJs, Elliott Field, Ted Quillan and others. Ballance hated him and assaulted him from time to time.
