Newspaper wars

June 19, 1957
Los Angeles

These numbers tell a story, but what is the story? According to the
graphs, circulation for Hearst’s daily and Sunday Examiner began
falling after World War II. The Times, according to these statistics,
passed the Examiner in daily circulation in early 1948 and in Sunday
circulation in early 1951. Note that the Mirror was always second to
the Herald-Express, the leading afternoon paper in Los Angeles.

With luck, maybe I’ll be able to turn up some answers….

Bonus factoid: In 1962, the Mirror ceased publication and the morning Examiner merged with the afternoon Herald-Express to form the Herald Examiner, which folded in 1989.
