This week’s mystery movie was the 1957 Twentieth Century-Fox picture The Deerslayer, with Lex Barker, Rita Moreno, Forrest Tucker, Cathy O’Donnell, Jay C. Flippen and Carlos Rivas. (The original credits have been replaced in the German release I used for the film).

Photography by Karl Struss.
Edited by Jodie Copelan.
Set decoration by Walter M. Scott, Fay Babcock and Max Goldman.

Music by Paul Sawtell and Bert Schefter.
Sound by Stephen Bass.
Makeup by Nadine Danks and Louis Hippe.
Directed by Kurt Neumann. Assistant director Herb Mendelson.
Produced by E.J. Baumgarten and Kurt Neumann.
Further information on The Deerslayer is available from the AFI Catalog.
The Deerslayer is available on a Region 2 Blu-ray from Amazon.
::
I picked The Deerslayer based on reviews in the trades and because it features Rita Moreno. The photography is gorgeous. The plot is very thin and not especially logical. I somehow escaped the novel in school and Mark Twain’s Fenimore Cooper’s Literary Offenses does not inspire me to read it. As usual, the Native American parts are played by non-indigenous people.
I’m going to guess that Bosley Crowther hated it or passed it off to one of the alphabet critics. Nope. The New York Times skipped it entirely.
Well, then.

Okay l’m going to try “The Deer Slayer” 1957 as guess number 2. I think I see that silver thingamabob in Tuesday’s image in a photo I found from that movie. No guesses on the foreground guy, or the serious faces surrounding the guy holding the thingamabob, though. Will await your confirmation that I’ve found the right title.

Forrest Tucker and IMDb combine with Jay C. Flippen to suggest “The Deerslayer” (1957), which suggests that Cathy O’Donnell is the Thursday woman with Rita Moreno as BOHW. I don’t think I’ve ever been right on a Monday before!
