I rummaged around in the trades for a highly rated film from 1960-61 and Tunes of Glory caught my eye. This mystery movie, and last week’s (Patterns), were challenges because nearly every frame of the movie was identified in one of the image search engines. Very annoying.
Let’s see which New York Times critic hated it. My money is on Bosley Crowther.
My goodness! Bosley Crowther actually liked a movie (Dec. 21, 1960)! I may have this bronzed once I pick myself up off the floor.
If ghostly echoes of Rudyard Kipling, The Charge of the Light Brigade and other voices respectfully intoning the traditions of the regiments seem to be heard through the new British film Tunes of Glory, which came to the Little Carnegie yesterday, it figures. For this is a picture that gets around, at last, to saying some things about military traditions that haven’t been said so aptly and so eloquently in years.

Wednesday brings a bloke looking very much like Gordon Jackson wearing a British officer’s uniform bearing the rank insignia of a Captain making this perhaps Tunes of Glory (1960) an Alec Guinness vehicle. Sorry, lotta words for one guess.
