This week’s mystery movie was the 1956 Columbia picture “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers,” with Hugh Marlowe, Joan Taylor, Donald Curtis, Morris Ankrum, John Zaremba, Tom Browne Henry, Brandon Rhodes and Larry Blake.
Screenplay by Bernard Gordon and George Worthing Yates, screen story by Curt Siodmak, suggested by “Flying Saucers From Outer Space” by Maj. Donald E. Keyhoe. Photography by Fred Jackman Jr., technical effects by Ray Harryhausen, art direction by Paul Palmentola, film editing by Danny D. Landres, set decoration by Sidney Clifford, special effects by Russ Kelley, music conducted by Mischa Bakaleinikoff. Produced by Charles H. Schneer, executive producer Sam Katzman, directed by Fred F. Sears.
“Earth vs. the Flying Saucers” is available on DVD from TCM.
New York Times film critic M.E.: “Clap on your space suit and speed to the Paramount.”
I love the crazy military agencies in this movie, like the “Air Intelligence Command” …
… and especially the “Hemispheric Defense Command.” I mean, really?
For Monday, we have an incredulous mystery guest.
Update: I went through the cast looking for guys with dimpled chins. I assumed this was Don Marlowe, but the Brain Trust correctly pointed out this is Duke Green.
And for Tuesday, we have another perplexed mystery gent. He probably does not approve of such goings-on. If he understood them (which he does not).
Update: This is Larry Blake.
Brain Trust roll call: Don Danard (Monday’s incredulous mystery gent).
I mistakenly credited Dan Nather, who hadn’t submitted a guess. Don/Dan, since I have never met either of you I sometimes get you mixed up!
For Wednesday, we have this mystery guest.
Update: This is Donald Curtis.
And here is our leading man, who will return Friday.
Update: This is Hugh Marlowe in a space invader’s helmet.
Brain Trust roll call: Mike Hawks (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery motorcycle cop), Sarah (mystery movie) and Sue Slutzky (mystery movie, Monday’s mystery gent and Tuesday’s mystery motorcycle cop).
For Thursday ….
Also….
Update: This is John Zaremba.
Also, this mystery guest emeritus…
Update: This is Morris Ankrum, last seen in 2014 as Jefferson Davis in mystery movie “Tennessee Johnson.”
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and all mystery guests), Earl Boebert (mystery movie and mystery cast), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery guests), Sue Slutzky (Wednesday’s mystery guests), Benito (mystery movie) and Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (mystery movie, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests).
For Friday …
Also.
Update: This is Joan Taylor and Hugh Marlowe.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (Monday’s mystery fellow and Thursday’s mystery guests), Don Danard (Thursday’s mysterious brain-zapped general), Chrisbo (mystery movie), Mike Hawks (Thursday’s mysterious brain-zapped general), Don Danard (Wednesday’s mystery officer), Sue Slutzky (Thursday’s mystery guests) and Sylvia E (mystery movie, Tuesday’s mystery motorcycle cop, Wednesday’s mystery officer and space helmet model, Thursday’s mystery guests and predicting Friday’s mystery guests).
I’ll say it’s long-time Republic studios stuntman Duke Green.

A good guess, but alas, he stopped making films by the time our mystery movie was shot.

The Thursday space ship looks like it’s from The Day the Earth Stood Still 1951 – but maybe that’s too well known a movie. Will keep hunting.
