This week’s mystery movie was the 1922 “The Toll of the Sea,” one of the earliest two-strip Technicolor features. Story by Frances Marion, directed by Chester M. Franklin, photographic direction by J.A. Ball, with Anna May Wong, Kenneth Harlan, Beatrice Bentley, Baby Moran, Etta Lee and Ming Young.
“Toll of the Sea” is available on DVD from Amazon.
For Monday, we have a mystery lad. Update: Make that mystery “lad.”
Update: This is “Baby” Priscilla Moran.
For Tuesday, our mystery “lad” has a mystery companion. Historical note: Our mystery movie may have one of the first “trouser roles” in cinema.
Update: This is Priscilla Moran and Beatrice Bentley.
Brain Trust roll call: Dan Nather (mystery movie), Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and mystery child), Bob Hansen (mystery movie and mystery star) and Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (mystery movie and mystery child).
For Wednesday, we have two mystery women. They are amused by such goings-on.
Update: These are gossips Ming Young, left, and Etta Lee.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (Tuesday’s mystery woman), Tucson Barbara (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests), Mary Mallory (mystery movie, Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests, mystery director, mystery production company and interesting historical note), Anne Papineau (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests), Dan Nather (Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests), Sarah (mystery movie and Monday’s mystery child), E. Yarber (mystery movie), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Tuesday’s mystery woman), Sylvia E. (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests) and Sue Slutzky (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesdsay’s mystery guests).
Gary: Right technical process, wrong movie.
For Thursday, our mystery leading man is about to engage in some seriously caddish behavior toward our mystery leading woman.
Update: This is Kenneth Harlan.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mystery gossips), Tucson Barbara (Wednesday’s mystery gossips), Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery gossips), Sue Slutzky (Wednesday’s mystery gossips), Beach Gal (mystery movie and all mystery guests), Anne Papineau (Wednesday’s mystery gossips), Sylvia E. For Friday, we have our mystery leading lady rescuing Thursday’s mystery cad from the ocean. Maybe she should have left him there, as she could have avoided all the suffering she does in the rest of the picture.
And here is our mystery leading lady, young and beautiful in a green outfit, and holding a red rose.
Update: This is Anna May Wong.
Brain Trust roll call: Mike Hawks (Thursday’s mystery cad), Mary Mallory (Thursday’s mystery cad and one of his NINE wives), Anne Papineau (Thursday’s mystery cad), Howard Mandelbaum (Thursday’s mystery cad), Tucson Barbara (Thursday’s mystery cad), Sue Slutzky (Thursday’s mystery cad), Beach Gal (Thursday’s mystery cad and today’s mystery leading lady), Sylvia E. A silent I should I gotten first thing! THE TOLL OF THE SEA. Beatrice Bentley today and Priscilla Moran today and yesterday. Chester Franklin the director directed for Selznick Pictures (the company of David O. Selznick’s father) and editor Hal Kern would go on to edit GONE WITH THE WIND. Selznick and John Hay Whitney had a deal to make most of Selznick International Pictures in color so that they received stock in Technicolor.
