This week’s mystery movie has been the 1947 Warner Bros. picture “The Unfaithful,” with Ann Sheridan, Lew Ayres, Zachary Scott, Eve Arden, Jerome Cowan, Steven Geray and John Hoyt. Original screenplay by David Goodis and James Gunn, photography by Ernest Haller, art direction by Leo K. Kuter, dialogue direction by Felix Jacoves, wardrobe by Travilla, special effects by William McGann and Robert Burks, set decorations by William Wallace, makeup by Perc Westmore, orchestral arrangements by Murray Cutter, musical direction by Leo F. Forbstein, music by Max Steiner, produced by Jerry Wald, directed by Vincent Sherman.
“The Unfaithful” is available on DVD from Warner Archive.
Writing in the New York Times (June 28, 1947), T.M.P. said:
The Warner Brothers have turned out a better than average murder mystery in “The Unfaithful,” but they have badly overweighted with melodramatics the things they obviously wanted to say about a pressing social problem. The new picture at the Strand stabs and jabs like a hit-and-run prizefighter at the subject of hasty divorces and the dangerous consequences to society of this ill conceived cure all for marital difficulties, but it never gets across a telling dramatic punch. However, through some uncommonly persuasive acting and skillful direction the patently artificial plot stands up surprisingly well.
Being the story of a wife who committed an indiscretion while her husband was overseas and sincerely regrets the transgression, the opportunities with the film easily could have slithered into slobbering sentimentality are many. But sure hands save the day.
I picked this movie for several reasons, but location shots are particularly interesting. I’ll try to do a separate post on them in the coming weeks. With so many familiar faces in this film, I had to go way down the cast list to get some mystery guests!
For Monday, we have a mystery woman in a mysterious downtown Los Angeles building that has appeared in other mystery movies.
Update: This is the Bradbury Building. Also, this is Lois Austin, as identified by Mary Mallory and Sylvia E, whom I neglected to credit earlier.
For Tuesday, we have an elegantly dressed mystery woman.
Update: This is Jane Harker.
For Wednesday, we have a somewhat disheveled mystery gent. He really does NOT approve of such goings-on!
Update: This is Douglas Kennedy.
For Thursday, our mystery woman buys a newspaper and boards a mystery funicular …
Update: This is Angels Flight.
… she relaxes with the other passengers …
What’s interesting is that this is a process shot, which means Warner Bros. built a set of Sinai
Oh dear. She does not approve of such goings-on in the mystery newspaper.
Update: This is Marta Mitrovich.
Update: This is the Los Angeles Times, although the newsboy says “Examiner.”
Brain Trust roll call: Charles Kjelland (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Don Danard (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery gent and mystery studio), Jenny M. (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Wednesday’s mystery gent) and Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mystery gent).
And for Friday, we have a bust of our leading lady (or is it?) by a mystery sculptor whose unfortunate death is driving the story.
Update: This is a bust of Ann Sheridan.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (mystery movie and Tuesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests), Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and Tuesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests), Mike Hawks (mystery movie, Thursday’s mystery woman and mystery passenger on mystery funicular), Gary (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery woman), Beach Gal (mystery movie, Wednesday’s mystery gent and Thursday’s mystery woman), Sarah (mystery movie, Wednesday’s mystery gent and Thursday’s mystery funicular), Sylvia E. (mystery movie, Wednesday’s mystery gent, Thursday’s mystery woman and mystery passenger on mystery funicular), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery woman) and L.C. (mystery movie and mystery cast).
I have no idea who she is, but I’m curious as to the name of the movie whose trailer was supposed to be from last week’s mystery movie.

That is a clip from “When Strangers Marry,” which was also known as “Betrayed.” Hence the confusion.

Well, if Wednesday isn’t Fred MacMurray, it’s his stunt double 😦 The ears suggest it’s Fred.
87 movies to choose from, I haven’t a clue which one this is.

Weds. looks like a young John Hamilton (aka Perry White in Superman,) but I can’t find an image where he’s EVER that young, so I don’t think that it’s him.
Will keep trying.

Okay! Thanks for the Angels Flight clue.
The Unfaithful 1947
Mon – I think is Lois Austin
Tues – Claire Meade
Weds – Douglas Kennedy
Thurs – Marta Mitrovich and I think the “in profile” mystery guy screen right is Heine Conklin (per IMdB ‘passenger on streetcar’) and the newspaper looks like the Los Angeles Times, bringing the terrible news to Marta.
What a story!
Hope Friday brings all of the great cast stars. Looking forward to your Saturday breakdown and maybe more historical Angels Flight imagery.
This was fun. Thanks.

Heinie Conklin on Angel’s Flight yesterday and a terrible bust of Ann Sheridan. The house that is supposedly hers and Zachary Scott’s in the film was actually the home of producer Jerry Wald.

Since Tuesday is not Claire Meade, can’t wait to find out who she is and correct the IMdB page.
