This week’s mystery movie has been the 1954 MGM picture “Betrayed,” with Clark Gable (his last film at MGM), Lana Turner, Victor Mature, Louis Calhern, O.E. Hasse, Wilfrid Hyde White, Ian Carmichael, Niall MacGinnis, Nora Swinburne and Roland Culver. Screenplay by Ronald Millar and George Froeschel, music by Walter Goehr, photography by F.A. Young, art direction by Alfred Junge, Lana Turner’s costumes by Balmain-Paris, makeup by John O’Gorman, directed by Gottfried Reinhardt.
“Betrayed” is available on DVD from Warner Archive.
Bonus mystery item: Can you identify the clip on the Warner Archive webpage misidentified as “Betrayed?”
Writing in the New York Times (Sept. 9, 1954), Bosley Crowther said:
By the time this picture gets around to figuring out whether the betrayer is [Lana] Turner or [Victor] Mature, it has taken the audience through such a lengthy and tedious amount of detail that it has not only frayed all possible tension, but it has aggravated patience as well. Miss Turner and [Clark] Gable have had many longwinded talks; Mr. Mature has thumped his chest like Tarzan and bellowed his boasts a score of times. An excess of espionage maneuvering has been laid out on the screen. The beauties of the countryside of the Netherlands have been looked at until they pall.
For Monday, we have a mystery woman….
Update: This is Nora Swinburne.
Here’s a better look. I cropped out Back of the Head Guy, who will appear later in the week. And as usual, she does not approve of such goings-on.
For Tuesday, we have a mystery Nazi.
Update: This is O.E. Hasse.
And alas, the DVD of our mystery movie is a less than perfect print.
For Wednesday, we have a mystery gent. Apologies for the fuzzy image – it’s the best that’s available.
Update: This is Ian Carmichael.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests), Jenny M. (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery Nazi) and Sylvia E. (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests).
For Thursday, we have a mystery gent in uni.
Update: This is Wilfrid Hyde White.
Brain Trust roll call: Jenny M. (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Sylvia E. (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Bob Hansen (Wednesday’s mystery gent) and Megan (Wednesday’s mystery gent).
For Friday, our mystery second lead in the big reveal….
Update: This is Victor Mature as “the Scarf” (notice his distinctive neckwear).
Also, our non-mysterious leading man and leading lady.
Update: This is Clark Gable and Lana Turner in their fourth and final movie together.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (mystery movie, all mystery guests and Back of the Head Guy), Howard Mandelbaum (Thursday’s mystery general), Sheila (Thursday’s mystery general), Tucson Barbara (mystery movie and all mystery guests), Roget-L.A. (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery general), Gary (Thursday’s mystery general), Jenny M. (Thursday’s mystery general), Anne Papineau (Thursday’s mystery general), Mike Hawks (mystery movie, Tuesday’s mystery Nazi, Thursday’s mystery general, correctly anticipating today’s mystery leads), Beach Gal (Thursday’s mystery general), Earl Bobert (mystery movie, Tuesday’s mystery Nazi, Wednesday’s mystery gent and Thursday’s mystery general), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (mystery movie, Tuesday’s mystery Nazi and Thursday’s mystery general), Sylvia E. (Thursday’s mystery general), David Inman (mystery movie, Wednesday’s mystery gent and Thursday’s mystery general), McDee (mystery movie, Wednesday’s mystery gent, Thursday’s mystery general, correctly anticipating today’s mystery leads) and Don Danard (Thursday’s mystery general).

Well it’s only Tuesday. I’m going to guess anyway:
The movie is: Betrayed 1954
Mon. – Nora Swinburne (cropped out mystery guy could be either Victor Mature or Clark Gable)
Tues. – O.E. Hasse
These are TOTALLY guesses.

Is this a colorized version?

No. We don’t do colorized versions except by mistake. This is a fuzzy dupe of a crappy Eastmancolor print and we beg the Brain Trust’s indulgence since it’s the best copy available.

Well, it sure looks like Wilfrid Hyde-White for Thursday, and since he’s got his hair my guess is “Betrayed,” 1954. So further guesses are O.E. Hasse for Tuesday and Ian Carmichael for Wednesday.

Mr Gable, Miss Turner, and Mr. Mature. I recall that when this film was released the publicity seemed to focus on Lana T. going to dark brown hair. Although I think I saw the original run, the hair campaign is all that I remember.
