This week’s mystery movie has been the 1932 Paramount picture “Million Dollar Legs,” with Jack Oakie, W.C. Fields, Andy Clyde, Lyda Roberti, Susan Fleming, Ben Turpin, Hugh Herbert, George Barbier and Dickie Moore. By Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Henry Myers, photographed by Arthur Todd. Directed by Edward Cline.
“Million Dollar Legs” is available on DVD from TCM.
L.N. of The New York Times wrote (July 9, 1932):
A hopefully mad sort of picture went on yesterday at the Paramount, where a series of comedians conducted themselves with a total lack of dignity. They made bad puns, took part in the Olympic Games and casually parodied the drama of a more serious day than this.
As most people have noticed, IMDB includes Hobart Bosworth in the cast as “Olympics Starter.” (Bosworth is listed as “Olympics Official” in the AFI catalog). Sid Saylor, listed in The New York Times (1932) as “Starter at Games,” is listed as “Olympics Weightlifting Official” in IMDB and “Referee at Weightlifting Competition” in the AFI catalog. The diving competition judge, alas, is unidentified.
Here are some better shots. Is this Bosworth?
The “Klopstokian Love Song,” as performed by Jack Oakie in “Million Dollar Legs.”
For Monday, we have a mystery gent.
Update: This is Eddie Dunn. You may recognize him …
… as the unfortunate chauffeur getting advice on car repairs from W.C. Fields in “The Bank Dick.”
For Tuesday, we have a dignified mystery gent.
Update: I gave credit for Herbert Evans, but I believe the fellow below, with Hugh Herbert, is Herbert Evans.
Tuesday’s mystery gent is indeed part of the household of Mata Machree, but I suspect he is another actor, not Evans.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (Monday’s mystery gent), Don Danard (Monday’s mystery gent), Mike Hawks (Monday’s mystery gent) and Howard Mandelbaum (Monday’s mystery gent).
For Wednesday, we have mystery woman on a train.
Update: This is Lyda Roberti.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery gent).
For Thursday, our mystery leading man has arrived at the train station.
Update: This is Charles R. Moore and Jack Oakie.
And our mystery leading woman is competing in the diving event….
Update: Susan Fleming, possibly with Hobart Bosworth.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (mystery movie and Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests), Anne Papineau (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery guest) and Sue Slutzky (mystery movie and Wednesday’s mystery guest).
And for Friday…..
Update: This is George Barbier and W.C. Fields
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (Thursday’s mystery gents and mystery leading woman; unsure about Thursday’s mystery judge), Benito (Thursday’s mystery leading man), Mike Hawks (mystery movie, mystery blonde bombshell, mystery leading woman and mystery leading man), Floyd Thursby (Thursday’s mystery leading man), Don Danard (Thursday’s mystery leading man), Beach Gal (mystery movie and mystery guests), Howard Mandelbaum (Thursday’s mystery gents and mystery leading woman; unsure about Thursday’s mystery judge), Su Slutzky (Thursday’s mystery leading man and leading woman), Patrick (mystery movie), Sylvia E (mystery movie and mystery guests — except Tuesday), Gary (mystery leading man/wrong movie) and Bruce Reznick (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery leading man).

This is my annual correct guess. I saw this (I think) at Caltech’s Cinematech in the early 1970s, which means that I’m getting old!

I happened to catch it on TV back in the 1970s. Recorded it on VHS and treasured the cassette for years as the movie was never commercially released. What a strange film. Delighted it’s finally out on DVD.
