This week’s mystery movie has been the 1932 Paramount picture “Million Dollar Legs,” with Jack Oakie, W.C. Fields, Andy Clyde, Lyda Roberti, Susan Fleming, Ben Turpin, Hugh Herbert, George Barbier and Dickie Moore. By Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Henry Myers, photographed by Arthur Todd. A hopefully mad sort of picture went on yesterday at the Paramount, where a series of comedians conducted themselves with a total lack of dignity. They made bad puns, took part in the Olympic Games and casually parodied the drama of a more serious day than this.
As most people have noticed, IMDB includes Hobart Bosworth in the cast as “Olympics Starter.” (Bosworth is listed as “Olympics Official” in the AFI catalog). Sid Saylor, listed in The New York Times (1932) as “Starter at Games,” is listed as “Olympics Weightlifting Official” in IMDB and “Referee at Weightlifting Competition” in the AFI catalog. The diving competition judge, alas, is unidentified.

Tuesday’s mystery gent is indeed part of the household of Mata Machree, but I suspect he is another actor, not Evans.

I happened to catch it on TV back in the 1970s. Recorded it on VHS and treasured the cassette for years as the movie was never commercially released. What a strange film. Delighted it’s finally out on DVD.
