This week’s mystery movie has been the 1932 Warner Bros. picture “Winner Take All,” with James Cagney, Marian Nixon, Guy Kibbee, Dickie Moore, Virginia Bruce, Alan Mowbray, Esther Howard, Clarence Muse, Clarence Wilson, Ralf Harold and John Roche. The film was based on a story by Gerald Beaumont, adapted by Robert Lord and Wilson Mizner, photographed by Robert Kurrle, with art direction by Robert Haas. The film was directed by Roy Del Ruth.
The movie is available on DVD from Warner Archive.
Writing in the New York Times (June 18, 1932) W.H. said:
After having been highly successful in his portrayals as a gangster, a gambler, a taxicab driver, a confidence man and an automobile racer, James Cagney, the stormy petrel of the Warner Brothers’ Studio, turns his attention, in “Winner Take All,” the current picture at the Strand, to impersonating a prizefighter, who prefers blondes but marries a brunette. The story of this new film is more than slightly callous and one that depends chiefly for entertainment on its obstreperous comedy.
For Monday, we have a mystery woman.
Update: This is Charlotte Merriam.
For Tuesday, we have a mystery gent.
Update: This is Julian Rivero.
For Wednesday, we have a mystery gent in a white coat….
…. Here’s a better look. We have cropped out the leading man due to his lack of mysteriousness.
Update: This is George “Gabby” Hayes before he became a comedy sidekick in Westerns.
For Thursday, we have a returning mystery guest in a newsboy cap and a non-mysterious companion.
Update: This is Clarence Muse and Guy Kibbee.
Brain Trust roll call: Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Dan Nather (mystery movie and Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests) and Don Danard (Wednesday’s mystery guest).
For Friday ….
Update: This is Dickie Moore, James Cagney and Marian Nixon.
… and in a more agitated state.
Update: This is Virginia Bruce and James Cagney.
Brain Trust roll call: Mary Mallory (mystery movie and Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests and Thursday’s Mystery Guest No. 2), Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s mystery guests), Mike Hawks (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery guests), Benito (Thursday’s Mystery Guest No. 2), Sylvia E. (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery guests), Tucson Barbara (mystery movie and Thursday’s Mystery Guest No. 2), L.C. (mystery movie and mystery cast) and Dan Nather (Thursday’s mystery guests).

The movie is WINNER TAKE ALL (1932) — one of my favorite pre-code James Cagney pictures!
Monday’s gal is Charlotte Merriam, Tuesday’s pug is Julian Rivero, and George “Gabby” Hayes (sans whiskers) today.

I’d say The Mystery Gent in the white coat is George Hayes in his pre-“Gabby” days.
