This week’s mystery movie has been the 1951 Swedish film “Miss Julie,” from the play by August Strindberg, with Anita Bjork, Ulf Palme, Marta Dorff, Lissi Alandh, Anders Henrikson, Inga Gill, Ake Fridell, Kurt-Olof Sundstrom, Max Von Sydow, Margareta Krook, Ake Claesson, Inger Norberg and Jan Hagerman. Photography by Goran Strindberg, music by Dag Wiren, conducted by Sixten Ehrling, art direction by Bibi Lindstrom, screenplay and direction by Alf Sjoberg.
“Miss Julie” is available on DVD from the Criterion Collection.
Writing in the New York Times (April 8, 1952) Bosley Crowther said:
August Strindberg’s old play, “Miss Julie,” which tells a grim, neurotic tale of the mad passion of a Swedish maiden for her father’s handsome valet, may be considerably old-fashioned in its heavily labored social theme and also a trifle antiquated in its devious psychology. The wall between master and servant, which existed in 1888, at the time the play was written, seems ridiculously feudal today and shame over loving the butler seems a rather dull cause for suicide.
But, even so, Sweden’s Alf Sjoberg, who wields a superb directorial hand, as well as puts together an excitingly cinematic script, has got from this Scandinavian drama a surprisingly fascinating film, which goes by the title of “Miss Julie” and opened at the World yesterday.
Miss Julie (Anita Bjork) chastises her fiance (Kurt-Olof Sundstrom) with a riding crop. And no, this is one of many things in “Miss Julie” that American audiences did not expect in 1951.
