This week’s mystery movie has been the 1945 Paramount film “The Stork Club,” with Betty Hutton, Barry Fitzgerald, Don DeFore, Robert Benchley, Bill Goodwin, Iris Adrian, Mikail Rasumny, Mary Young and Andy Russell. It was written by B.G. DeSylva and John McGowan and directed by Hal Walker.
The DVD is available from Amazon.com.
Writing in the New York Times (Dec. 20, 1945), Bosley Crowther said:
A bright and beribboned Christmas package was opened at the Paramount yesterday to reveal a purely frivolous donation, but one which is good for lots of laughs. It goes by the name of “The Stork Club,” and it has as principals in its cast the tom-boisterous Betty Hutton and the roguish Barry Fitzgerald. With these two playing its farce comedy in an agile and debonair style, the silliness of its story is neatly and pleasantly disguised.
For Monday, we have a slightly unfocused (sorry) mystery woman.
Update: This is Jean Acker.
For Tuesday, we have a mystery crooner.
Update: This is Andy Russell – and I never realized how many members of the Brain Trust are Andy Russell fans.
For Wednesday, we have a mystery woman.
Update: This is Mary Young.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie, Monday’s mystery woman and Tuesday’s mystery crooner), Jenny M. (Tuesday’s mystery crooner), Mike Hawks (mystery movie, Monday’s mystery woman and Tuesday’s mystery crooner), L.C. (mystery movie and mystery cast), Patrick (mystery movie, Monday’s mystery woman and Tuesday’s mystery crooner), Bob Hansen (Tuesday’s mystery crooner) and Ed (Tuesday’s mystery crooner).
For Thursday, two semi-mysterious chaps are having an intimate conversation in a telephone booth.
Update: This is Don DeFore and Robert Benchley.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Mary Mallory (mystery movie and Monday’s and Tuesday’s mystery guests) and Patrick (Wednesday’s mystery guest).
