This week’s mystery movie has been the 1943 RKO film “Seven Days Ashore,” with Wally Brown, Alan Carney, Marcy McGuire, Dooley Wilson, Gordon Oliver, Virginia Mayo, Amelita Ward, Elaine Shepard, Marjorie Gateson, Alan Dinehart, Miriam LaVelle, Margaret Dumont, Freddie Slack and Orchestra and Freddie Fisher — Colonel Corn and His Band. The screenplay was by Edward Verdier, Irving Phillips and Lawrence Kimble, from an original story by Jacques Deval. The musical director was our old friend C. Bakaleinikoff, with songs by Mort Greene and Lew Pollack, orchestra arrangements by Gene Rose, and dance direction by Charles O’Curran. Photography was by Russell Metty, art direction by Albert S. D’Agostino and set decorations by Darrell Silvera and William Stevens. “Seven Days Ashore” was produced and directed by John H. Auer.
It is not commercially available on DVD and was apparently never released on VHS.
July 6, 1944: “Seven Days Ashore” opens as the second half of a bill with “Days of Glory.”
Writing in the New York Times (April 26, 1944), P.P.K. said:
Seven days can be a long time. You begin getting the general idea upon seeing “Seven Days Ashore,” which came to the Palace yesterday. The ingredients of an agreeable — not stupendous, but agreeable — picture are there. Why the ingredients fail to jell is a matter that RKO might take up with the various cooks who ran off this corn-crusted potpourri.
In reviewing “Days of Glory” (July 8, 1944), Los Angeles Times critic Edwin Schallert said:
The audience seems to get a goodly quota of enjoyment out of the additional “Seven Days Ashore. Miss McGuire puts plenty of zip into her songs. Alan Dinehart is responsible for some good quips. Laughs are rather well generated.

I meant his twin, Harold Homans. Robert and Harold were Siamese twins, surgically separated at age ten. Unknown to directors and casting agents, they played the same parts interchangeably in the same pictures and split their wages (50-50!). Alas (as you would say), their deception was discovered in 1943 during the filming of the war story, “The Guts in the Bottom of the Trench Were My Twin Brother’s.” They never worked again, and were sorely missed in the Monogram cafeteria. I believe they’re still waiting tables at Musso & Frank’s.
