This week’s mystery movie has been the 1939 Warner Bros. picture “Women in the Wind,” with Kay Francis, William Gargan, Victor Jory, Maxie Rosenbloom, Eddie Foy Jr., Sheila Bromley, directed by John Farrow, from a screenplay by Lee Katz and Albert DeMond, from a novel by Francis Walton. Photography was by Sid Hickox and art direction by Carl Jules Weyl.
“Women in the Wind” has apparently never been commercially released on VHS or DVD.
June 8, 1939, “Women in the Wind” opens in Los Angeles.
According to Edwin Schallert of the Los Angeles Times (June 22, 1938), “Women in the Wind” was to be Kay Francis’ last picture with Warners upon completion of “Unlawful.” Her next film would be “In Name Only” at RKO, followed by stints at Universal and finally Monogram, where she was producer on three of her pictures.
A capsule review by Frank S. Nugent in the New York Times (April 13, 1939) says:
Caught in the backwash of “Tailspin,” which flew over much the same terrain, the Palace’s “Women in the Wind” never quite gets off the ground, even though most of its action is in the sky. It is another commonplace little fiction embroidered upon the Powder Puff Derby, the annual transcontinental race for the women fliers, with Kay Francis as the girl who simply has to win the race to get money for her brother’s operation.
“Women in the Wind” opened June 8, 1939, at the Warner Bros. Hollywood and Downtown theaters as the barely noticed second half of a double bill with “King of the Turf.”

Well Frankie Burke, a dead ringer for Frank Jenks’ theoretical son, on Monday, Maxie Rosenbloom ina aviation themed bar pouring his heart out to an unnamed gentleman with perhaps the greatest comb-over I’ve ever seen on Wednesday and William Gargan wearing what looks like a vaguely military-style jacket on Thursday makes this Women in the Wind (1939) setting up a likely Friday appearance by Kay Francis. Fingers crossed.
