This week’s mystery movie has been the 1938 Twentieth Century-Fox film “Mr. Moto Takes a Chance.”
The film is available on DVD from Amazon.
An unsigned review in the New York Times (June 13, 1938) says:
If you are familiar with the singsong repartee and the perhaps slightly monotonous charm of ???Ma Moto, as impersonated by Peter Lorre, you will have learned to expect from this small Japanese secret agent all that he gives you in the latest chapter of his biography, entitled “Mr. Moto Takes a Chance,” at the Globe. But there must be people in the world who never heard of Mr. Moto and for the benefit of these late comers we might as well explain, first of all, that Mr. Moto is bullet proof.
For Monday, we have a mystery woman.
Update: This is Rochelle Hudson.
For Tuesday, we have some mystery chaps with a movie camera.
Update: This is Robert Kent and Chick Chandler.
Brain Trust roll call: Benito (Monday’s mystery aviatrix/wrong movie), Suzanne Stone (Monday’s mystery aviatrix), Robert Morrissey (Monday’s mystery aviatrix), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (mystery movie and Monday’s mystery aviatrix), Dewey Webb (Monday’s mystery aviatrix/wrong movie) and Bob Hansen (Monday’s mystery aviatrix).
This week’s mystery movie comes from guest host Earl Boebert, a longtime member of the Brain Trust who recently published a book on the Deepwater Horizon incident.
For Wednesday, we have this impressive mystery guest.
Update: This is J. Edward Bromberg.
Brain Trust roll call: Mike Hawks (mystery movie and mystery guests), Don Danard (one of Tuesday’s mystery guests), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Tuesday’s mystery guests) and L. Pots (Monday’s mystery aviatrix).
And for Thursday, we have this mystery guest.
Update: This is George Regas.
Brain Trust roll call: Don Danard (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Howard Mandelbaum (mystery movie and Monday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Benito (mystery movie and Wednesday’s mystery guest), B.J. Merholz (mystery movie and Wednesday’s mystery guest) and Lee Ann Megan and Thom (Wednesday’s mystery guest).
And for Friday, a mask conceals one of the most famous faces in Hollywood.
Update: This is Peter Lorre.
Brain Trust roll call: Howard Mandelbaum (Thursday’s mystery guest), Mike Hawks (Thursday’s mystery guest), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Thursday’s mystery guest) and L.C. (mystery movie and Monday’s mystery aviatrix).
Guessing it’s Rochelle Hudson in PIRATES OF THE SKIES 1939. A different still says she is Dorothy Arnold so that’s my 2nd guess.

This appears to be a pretty pilot at the wheel of a plane, wearing a fabric helmet (stylish but not much protection), the straps perhaps of a parachute, and a lit torch — not in the British sense of a flashlight turned on, but an actual flaming torch!!! Can’t wait for the next installment.

Methinks the Monday lady is wearing a cotton (not nylon) parachute harness so this would be the 1930s maybe. Cotton is okay but nylon is stronger and safer.
