This week’s mystery movie has been the 1950 Universal International film “Woman on the Run,” with Ann Sheridan, Dennis O’Keefe, Robert Keith, John Qualen, Frank Jenks, Ross Elliott, Jane Liddell, Joan Fulton, J. Farrell MacDonald, Steven Geray, Victor Sen Yung, Rako Sato, Syd Saylor and Thomas P. Dillon. The screenplay was by Alan Campbell and Norman Foster from a story by Sylvia Tate published in American Magazine. The film was photographed by Hal Mohr, with art direction by Boris Leven, set decoration by Jacque Mapes and music by Emil Newman and Arthur Lange. The film was produced by Howard Welsch and directed by Norman Foster.
The Film Noir Foundation’s restoration of the movie, released in May 2016, is available from Flicker Alley in a Blu-ray/DVD package for $34.59 from Amazon.
“Woman on the Run” opened Oct. 28, 1950, in Los Angeles.
Philip K. Scheuer of the Los Angeles Times said (Oct. 30, 1950):
For a Hitchcock-type thriller … “Woman on the Run” is really quite a presentable little affair, directed (after one of the talkiest openings on record) with fair imagination by Norman Foster, who also collaborated on the screenplay. His roller-coaster finish, at any rate, demonstrates what applied cinematics can do to make the spectator breathe hard over a situation which, if he were thinking hard instead, would quickly establish itself as coming mighty close to preposterous.
Bosley Crowther of the New York Times (Nov. 30, 1950) said:
Since it never pretends to be more than it is, “Woman on the Run,” which began a stand at the Criterion yesterday, is melodrama of solid if not spectacular proportions. Working on what obviously was a modest budget, its independent producers may not have achieved a superior chase in this yarn about the search by the police and the fugitive’s wife for a missing witness to a gangland killing. But as a combination of sincere characterizations, plausible dialogue, suspense and the added documentary attribute of a scenic tour through San Francisco, “Woman on the Run” may be set several notches above the usual cops-and-corpses contributions from the Coast.
