Here’s a question for the Brain Trust:
Many years ago, as a young kid watching movies on TV, I saw a film set in the Depression. In one scene in a hobo camp, one of the main characters takes his high school or college diploma out of his shoe and refolds it to cover a hole in the sole. Can anybody identify this mystery movie from my childhood? I have been looking for this movie for years without success.

Hmmm. It sounds like it would be something in “Wild Boys of the Road” or “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum.” Unfortunately, it’s been a while since I’ve seen either one, so I can’t offer a definite answer. I hope someone comes up with it.

First of all, the action you described is film creation at its best. I can think of no other single bit of action that expressed the Great Depression better. While I don’t specifically remember seeing it, I’d like to venture a guess. ‘City for Conquest’.

Wish I could be of help regarding this intriguing movie mystery. I, too, have a childhood memory of catching a movie on TV and to this day possess no idea what it actually was. I was no big fan of westerns but in the TV moment a large herd of cattle was intentionally stampeded over a cliff. It appeared completely real. And the filmmakers actually cut to shots of the animals violently hitting rocks, white-face Herefords, maybe. No, it wasn’t Red River. Whatever were they screening that day?

I finally discovered that another dim childhood movie memory was from the second part of “Gone With the Wind,” which my mother had taken me to see in a revival showing.

I don’t remember the name of the movie with the cattle going over the cliff, either, but I do remember that scene. I also remember where I saw it: The RKO Hillstreet Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The movie had to have been released between 1948 or ’49 (about the time my memory kicked in) and 1951 (when we moved away from the bus line and no longer went downtown for movies.) It was probably an RKO release, or from one of the poverty row studios that RKO distributed for. I recall seeing the scene again years later while flipping around the TV dial, but didn’t get the name of the movie that time. I hope somebody else reading here can come up with it, as it has been nagging at my memory for decades.
