This week’s movie has been the 1934 RKO picture “Murder on the Blackboard.” The film, the second in the Hildegarde Withers series, was released by Warner Archive in a set of six films after being unavailable for years. The first film in the series was “The Penguin Pool Murder.”
This week’s mystery movie begins with one of the most common opening shots of the era: New York framed by the Brooklyn Bridge. The studios out in Los Angeles must have had thousands of feet of stock footage for just this purpose.
Here, for example, is the establishing shot of the 1932 RKO Pathe film “Panama Flo,” a mystery movie from 2014.
For Monday, we have a surprised mystery guest.
Update: This is Tully Marshall.
And for Tuesday, we have a mystery woman.
This is Barbara Fritchie, who was recognized by the Brain Trust even though she only made six films, the last of which was in 1935.
Please congratulate Michael Ryerson, Sheila, Mary Mallory, Mike Hawks and Bob Hansen for identifying Monday’s mystery chap.
Wednesday’s chap is full of woe.
This is Edgar Kennedy
Please congratulate Mary Mallory (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery woman), Mike Hawks (mystery movie and Tuesday’s mystery woman), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (mystery movie and mystery guests), Patrick (mystery movie and mystery guests) and LC (mystery movie and mystery cast).
Thursday’s mystery guest has a most impressive mustache. And he is not pleased.
This is Frederick Vogeding.
Please congratulate Patrick (Wednesday’s mystery chap), Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mystery chap), Anne Papineau (mystery movie and Monday’s mystery gent), Mike Hawks (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Michael Ryerson (Wednesday’s mystery gent) and A.K. Witt (Monday’s mystery fellow).
And for Friday, we have You Know Who, You Know Who and You Know Who.
This is Regis Toomey, Edna May Oliver and James Gleason.
Please congratulate Mary Mallory (Thursday’s angry mystery gent), Sarah (mystery movie) and Mike Hawks (Thursday’s angry mystery gent).

Actually, “Laura” opens with the painting of Gene Tierney followed by Clifton Webb’s monologue over interiors of Waldo Lydecker’s apartment.

Well, it’s one of he Edna May Oliver/James Gleason (Hildegard Withers/Inspector Piper) delights, and since there’s a scene with a blackboard I’m going to guess “Murder on the Blackboard.”
Nice tugboat, also.
