Holocaust Remembrance Day

This is an especially appropriate day to recall the editorial stand of the Los Angeles Times in the 1930s toward European refugees. In a March 30, 1938, editorial,  The Times opposed wholesale admission of European refugees, saying that they would either go on welfare or take jobs away from Americans.

No, really, that’s what The Times said.

    I know it’s been a long time, but shame on what the Times had said. God only knows why things happen the way they do. But those that have done evil and continue to do evil will pay come Judgment Day when they face God Almighty. In Jesus name, Amen

    It is shocking. And horrid. And the Times editorial board needs to be reminded that it’s never too late for an apology.

      From today’s perspective, some of The Times’ editorials in the historic era are stunning. The Times opposed a federal anti-lynching law, opposed the recall of Mayor Frank Shaw, opposed Japanese immigration and supported the expulsion/internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. I haven’t read as many editorials from the Examiner because it’s on microfilm rather than online, but the ones I have seen are no better.
