This week’s mystery movie has been the 1934 RKO picture “Bachelor Bait,” with Stu Erwin (Friday’s mystery guest), Rochelle Hudson (Wednesday’s mystery guest), Pert Kelton (Thursday’s mystery guest), Skeets Gallager (Friday’s mystery guest) and Burton Churchill (not shown). It was directed by George Stevens, from a screenplay by Glenn Tryon, based on a story by Edward and Victor Halperin, photographed by David Abel, with music by Max Steiner.
This will be easy and difficult. The location is obvious. The mystery movie, not so much.
This is the exterior of Los Angeles City Hall as seen from Spring Street. Notice that there are no hand rails, as seen in more recent period pictures such as “Gangster Squad,” “L.A. Confidential” and “Changeling.” This is not the earliest film appearance of City Hall, which had previously been used in the 1928 Lon Chaney film “While the City Sleeps.” It’s entirely possible that City Hall was used in even earlier movies that I haven’t discovered.
For Tuesday,we have this mystery couple.
This is Anne Shirley and Dick Winslow.
Please congratulate Mary Mallory, Julie Merholz and Anthony for identifying Los Angeles City Hall, Monday’s mystery building.
And for Wednesday, we have this mystery woman.
This is Rochelle Hudson.
Please congratulate Jenny M, Mike Hawks and Bob Hansen for identifying Tuesday’s mystery woman.
And for Thursday, a somewhat mysterious woman.
This is Pert Kelton.
Please congratulate Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mystery woman), LC (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Anne Papineau (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Jenny M (mystery movie and Wednesday’s mystery guest), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Dewey Webb (mystery movie and Wednesday’s mystery guest), Mike Hawks (mystery movie, Tuesday’s mystery man and Wednesday’s mystery woman), ValleyDave (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Dan Nather (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Benito (Wednesday’s mystery woman) and Bob Hansen (Wednesday’s mystery woman).
And for Friday, it’s our non-mystery leading man and a semi-mysterious companion.
And Skeets Gallagher, left, and Stu Erwin.
Please congratulate Benito (mystery movie and Thursday’s mystery woman), Mike Hawks (Thursday’s mystery woman) and Mary Mallory (mystery movie and guests).
Obviously LA City Hall and the 1920s.

Well, Skeets Gallagher and Stuart Erwin pretty much gave it away today — the film is BACHELOR BAIT. That means Tuesday’s kids are Anne Shirley and Dick Winslow, Wednesday (as I already mentioned) is Rochelle Hudson, and Thursday is Pert Kelton.
I’m starting to trust my hunches more on these mystery photos, but I’m still not there yet . . .
