This week’s mystery movie has been the 1934 Universal film “One More River,” starring Diana Wynyard, Frank Lawton, Colin Clive and Mrs. Patrick Campbell. It was directed by James Whale with a script by R.C. Sherriff, adapted from the novel by John Galsworthy. Art direction was by Charles D. Hall, photography by John J. Mescall and music by W. Franke Harling. Special effects by John P. Fulton and edited by Ted Kent.
For Monday, we have a mystery woman.
This is Mrs. Patrick Campbell, who she only appeared in six films, the last in 1935. But that was no obstacle to the Daily Mirror’s Brain Trust.
And for today, it’s a mystery chap in a newsboy cap and wing collar. Don’t see that too often, eh?
Even a newsboy cap and goggles can’t hide the fact that this is Snub Pollard.
Please congratulate Howard Mandelbaum (Monday’s mystery woman), Stanhope1929 (mystery movie and mystery cast) and Dan Nather (Monday’s mystery woman). Most impressive!
And for Wednesday, a dapper mystery chap.
E.E. Clive, who also appeared in Whale’s “The Invisible Man” and “Bride of Frankenstein,” and many Bulldog Drummond films.
Please congratulate Mary Mallory for identifying Tuesday’s mystery fellow.
And for Thursday, who can spot the mystery director making a cameo appearance in this shot? I’m told that his lines in this scene are the only existing recording of his voice.
On the right, Whale, who makes a cameo in this scene at the 20:38 mark, calling for three cheers for David Dornford (Reginald Denny, center).
Please congratulate Floyd Thursby (mystery movie/wrong mystery guest), Dan Nather (mystery movie, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s mystery guests), Stanhope1929 (Wednesday’s mystery chap) and Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Wednesday’s mystery chap).
And for Friday, we have the mysterious leads of our mystery movie.
This is Shelley Duvall and Robin Williams in “Popeye.” OK, it’s Diana Wynyard and Frank Lawton.
Please congratulate Anne Papineau (mystery movie, mystery director, mystery guests), Stanhope1929 (mystery movie, mystery director), Lee Ann, Megan and Thom (Thursday’s mystery guest), Mary Mallory (mystery movie, mystery director and mystery guests) and LC (mystery movie, mystery directory and mystery guests).

Alfred Hitchcock must be the director, but this shot isn’t PARADINE CASE. Snub was only in that film.

Alas, no…. It’s a different director…

And if it is PARADINE CASE, which I thought it was yesterday because that looked like Leo G. Carroll but isn’t, who else could it be? Colin Kenny? That woman does not look like anyone in the film, she’s definitely not one of the stars, and doesn’t fit Elspeth Dudgeon or Isobel Elsom.

The “Dornford” Political Rally shot is also from James Whale’s ONE MORE RIVER!

For Thursday, the actor at the center of the shot looks like Reginald Denny, so we are wondering if the mystery movie is one of the Bulldog Drummond series.

Today’s players are Diana Wynyard and Frank Lawton, we believe. That would make the mystery director James Whale and the film “One More River”. The clinching clue was Arthur Hoyt in the still with Reginald Denny.

I’m not real sure, but I think that’s director James Whale at the far right in Thursday’s photo. I don’t recall him speaking . . . I’ll have to look at the movie again. And, of course, that’s Diana Wynyard and Frank Lawton today.

It IS James Whale, and is his only known appearance on film, and the only known recording of his voice. He leads the cheer for Reginald Denny’s character “David Dornford” after he wins the election.

It certainly is. Thanks and a tip of the hat to Whale biographer James Curtis, who pointed this out to us.
