This week’s mystery movie has been “Badlands” (1973), written and directed by Terrence Malick, starring Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek and Warren Oates. I generally avoid more recent films, figuring that they are too easy, but realized that 41 years isn’t all that recent anymore. I chose “Badlands” because it was based on the Charles Starkweather saga of the 1950s. I try to vary the eras and genres to make the mystery films more challenging, although I have neglected musicals because most are so well known and westerns because I don’t have many in the archives.
And for Monday, we have a mystery gent…. in color!
This mystery guest is Charles Fitzpatrick in his only film appearance. The brain trust correctly identified everyone else.
And for Tuesday, a mystery gent with a chicken.
And for Wednesday, another mystery gent.
Our mysterious friend with the chicken was recognized by many people. Please congratulate LC (mystery man with chicken), Patrick (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken), Herb Nichols (mystery man with chicken), Rick (mystery movie), Benito (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken), dlhartzog (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken), Dewey Webb (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken), Barbara Klein (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken), ValleyDave (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken), Pat van Hartesveldt (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken) and Julie Merholz (mystery movie, mystery man with chicken).
And for Thursday, an entirely non-mysterious gent.
Please congratulate Patrick (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Barbara Klein (Wednesday’s mystery gent), Dewey Webb (Wednesday’s mystery gent) and dlhartzog (Wednesday’s mystery gent).
And for Friday, our two very young mystery stars.
Please congratulate Julie Merholz (Thursday’s mystery painter), dlhartzog (Thursday’s mystery painter), Barbara Klein (Thursday’s mystery painter) and LC (mystery movie, mystery stars).
Unclear on the gent, but just wanted to share yet another retail item … Perhaps you’ve seen already. http://www.blackdahlialacquer.com

Egg on my face. Today is Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek, so it’s Badlands. Wednesday would be John Carter and Thursday is Warren Oates. Spacek grew up ten miles from my hometown, and my mother and her father worked on history projects together.

Badlands. Sissy S. Martin S. and Warren Oates. I used to see Martin Sheen in off Broadway plays in the 60’s. I had forgotten that he had ever been so young. (Of course I continue to be 27.)

I was sure I recognized the Chicken from a major role in Herzog’s Heart of Glass, but then Warren Oates suggested Monte Hellman’s “Cockfighter.”
Once I got poultry off my mind, however, “Badlands” seemed the logical choice.
