This week’s mystery movie was the 1947 film “They Won’t Believe Me,” starring Robert Young, Susan Hayward and Jane Greer. It was written by Jonathan Latimer, based on a story by Gordon McDonell, with cinematography by Harry J. Wild, music by Roy Webb, directed by Irving Pichel and produced by Joan Harrison.
Several people have asked: “This movie isn’t out on DVD. Where can I get a copy?”
As some may remember, the mystery movies come from the Daily Mirror’s DVD library, a somewhat large but quirky collection of movies recorded from TV over the years. I almost never buy commercial DVDs and I don’t keep up to date with what’s coming out from Criterion, Warner Archive or Kino. So in picking the mystery film, I’m not always aware that it’s hard to find, although I try to avoid the more common films that will be too easy. I happened to record this copy in March 2012, when it was on TCM.
A little digging reveals that it was issued on VHS and Laserdisc, both of which are available on EBay. It’s also available on VHS at Eddie Brandt’s Saturday Matinee, my first stop for rare films. (And EBay being EBay, you can also buy a Laserdisc player, a device that is still popular among some film fans.)
Given the repetitive programming at TCM, I would imagine that it will turn up again eventually. I have never asked TCM to program a particular film, but you can submit a movie request here. Tell them the Daily Mirror sent you!
Believe me, I know some people take the mystery photos very seriously – and so do I. In fact, I had a tough time picking a mystery movie this week. The first DVD I grabbed was a South Korean film that nobody would recognize, the second was a forgotten grade-Z Navy comedy and the third was someone we just had.
So here we are, after much searching: a mystery building
And inside this mystery building, we find this mystery gentleman.
Please congratulate the following folks for identifying our mystery structure, now being renovated in downtown Michael Ryerson, Callbox Sam, Los Angeles: Mary Mallory, Patrick, Ken J., Alan H. Simon, L.A. Designers/Richard Niederberg, Patrice Roe, Herb Nichols, Larry Miller, Dan, Sarah, DLHartzog and Joe Vogel.
A tip of the hat to Alan H. Simson, who writes that he had an office in the building for many years.
Michael Ryerson says: that’s our beloved XXXX, which narrows the possible movies down to a scant 1500 or so.
And for Wednesday, we have this mystery damsel.
Please congratulate Mary Mallory (mystery movie and mystery man), Suzanne Annette Stone (mystery gent), Julie Merholz (mystery man/wrong movie), Jenny M (mystery man), Dewey Webb (mystery movie, mystery building and mystery gent), Charles Kjelland (mystery gent), Herb Nichols (mystery gent), Barbara Klein (mystery man), Don Danard (mystery man), Rick (mystery movie, mystery gent), ValleyDave (mystery gent), Rick Scott (mystery gent), Patrick (mystery man), Sarah (mystery movie), Barbara Klein (mystery movie, mystery building), Gary Martin (mystery gent), William (mystery movie, mystery building, mystery man) and LC (mystery man, mystery building/wrong movie).
Note to the prop department: When a movie is set in New York, try to avoid boxes clearly stenciled “Los Angeles.”
And for Thursday, we have a mystery lady.
Please congratulate Patrick (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Julie Merholz (mystery movie, building and mystery woman), Barbara Klein (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Jenny M (mystery movie and mystery woman), William (Wednesday’s mystery woman), Valley Dave (mystery movie, mystery guests) and LC (mystery movie and cast).
Special kudos to Patrick for identifying our mystery lady as the model for a certain Los Angeles mural that was one of my favorites.
And for Friday, two (utterly not) mystery guests.
Please congratulate Julie Merholz (Thursday’s mystery woman), Jenny M (Thursday’s mystery woman), Dennis Gilliam (mystery movie, mystery building, Monday’s mystery gent), Mary Mallory (Thursday’s mystery woman), Gary Martin (mystery movie and mystery guests), Patrick (mystery movie, Thursday’s mystery woman), Don Danard (Thursday’s mystery woman), Barbara Klein (Thursday’s mystery woman), dlhartzog (mystery movie, Thursday’s mystery woman), Rick (Thursday’s mystery woman), Anne Papineau (Thursday’s mystery woman), Michael Ryerson (mystery movie and guests) and Ed (Thursday’s mystery woman).
Well, that’s our beloved 1924 Hall of Justice, which narrows the possible movies down to a scant 1500 or so.

That is the Hall of Justice on Temple and Broadway in Los Angeles Civic Center. The building is now being restored. I had my office there for many years. The pillars at the top of the building reflect the jail bars behind them. The Los Angeles County jail was on the top floor of this building which also housed the criminal courts, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, the Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Public Defender, the Sheriff and the Coroner in the basement. It was a beautiful building and although the interior is being altered to house the Sheriff (no courts), the lobby will remain as it was. A nice effort by the County.

It’s the upper part of the old Hall of Justice on Temple Street. I believe the county jail was behind those dignified columns, and courtrooms and offices were on the lower floors.

When I came here to Milford Pa. in 1980 there were any number of dotty old ladies typical of small town America. Amongst them was one who claimed that she and Robert Young were very good friends. Yes,yes, we all smiled, We’re sure you are. Then one day she walked into the local diner with him as her companion and introduced him to all her friends. So, it was agreed, we’re now short one dotty old lady.
