This week’s mystery movie was the 1947 film “They Won’t Believe Me,” starring Robert Young, Susan Hayward and Jane Greer. It was written by Jonathan Latimer, based on a story by Gordon McDonell, with cinematography by Harry J. Wild, music by Roy Webb, directed by Irving Pichel and produced by Joan Harrison.
Several people have asked: “This movie isn’t out on DVD. Where can I get a copy?”
As some may remember, the mystery movies come from the Daily Mirror’s DVD library, a somewhat large but quirky collection of movies recorded from TV over the years. I almost never buy commercial DVDs and I don’t keep up to date with what’s coming out from Criterion, Warner Archive or Kino. So in picking the mystery film, I’m not always aware that it’s hard to find, although I try to avoid the more common films that will be too easy. I happened to record this copy in March 2012, when it was on TCM.
A little digging reveals that it was issued on VHS and Laserdisc, both of which are available on EBay. It’s also available on VHS at Eddie Brandt’s Saturday Matinee, my first stop for rare films. (And EBay being EBay, you can also buy a Laserdisc player, a device that is still popular among some film fans.)
Given the repetitive programming at TCM, I would imagine that it will turn up again eventually. I have never asked TCM to program a particular film, but you can submit a movie request here. Tell them the Daily Mirror sent you!
Believe me, I know some people take the mystery photos very seriously – and so do I. In fact, I had a tough time picking a mystery movie this week. The first DVD I grabbed was a South Korean film that nobody would recognize, the second was a forgotten grade-Z Navy comedy and the third was someone we just had.
So here we are, after much searching: a mystery building

That is the Hall of Justice on Temple and Broadway in Los Angeles Civic Center. The building is now being restored. I had my office there for many years. The pillars at the top of the building reflect the jail bars behind them. The Los Angeles County jail was on the top floor of this building which also housed the criminal courts, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, the Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Public Defender, the Sheriff and the Coroner in the basement. It was a beautiful building and although the interior is being altered to house the Sheriff (no courts), the lobby will remain as it was. A nice effort by the County.
