Our mystery movie is the 1941 MGM film “Unholy Partners,” which curiously enough has apparently never been released on DVD or even VHS.

"Unholy Partners"

Edward G. Robinson plays Bruce Corey, a newspaperman for the New York Daily Sentinel returning from World War I who has ideas about a new sort of newspaper – a smaller format that can be read easily on subways, as he is demonstrating in this scene.

Financing a new paper is a challenge so he turns to:

Underworld figure Merrill Lambert (Edward Arnold).

"Unholy Partners"

And he launches the New York Mercury.

“All the News All the Time.”

"Unholy Partners"
The Mercury pulls a number of stunts to boost circulation, and Laraine Day, as the voice of reason asks: “Aren’t you afraid of being sued?”

Answer: Well that’s another headline.

Monday’s mystery fellow is at the door!

(Back of the Head Guy is Charles Dingle).

And for Tuesday, we have this mystery woman.

Here’s our dapper mystery chap for Wednesday. And no, it’s not Rudy Vallee from “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Really.

Please congratulate Mary Mallory (mystery movie and cast), Jenny M (Tuesday’s mystery woman), Julie Merholz (mystery movie and cast), Don Danard (Tuesday’s mystery woman), Dewey Webb (Tuesday’s mystery woman/wrong movie), Lee Ann (Tuesday’s mystery woman), Barbara Klein (mystery movie and cast), Bob Hansen (Tuesday’s mystery woman)and Rick Scott (Tuesday’s mystery woman).

According to imdb, this actor’s scenes were deleted. Oops.

Update: Sorry, it turns out that imdb credits two people for the same role. My error entirely.  This is the second fellow credited to the role. My apologies to Don Danard for marking his answer wrong (which has since been rectified).

Note: Today’s post was delayed by a dead battery in my car.

For Thursday, on the right we have: Oh… Him.

Wednesday’s Mystery Photo No. 2 was interesting. Imdb lists two actors for a police inspector, C.C. (scenes deleted) and R.H. Further investigation shows that this is R.H. rather than C.C.

So here’s how yesterday’s answers break down:

Mary Mallory (Wednesday’s Mystery Man No. 1, C.C.), Julie Merholz (Wednesday Mystery Man No. 1, C.C.), Don Danard (R.H.), Valley Dave (mystery movie and cast), William (mystery movie and cast, plus R.H.), Mike Hawks (mystery movie and cast, plus R.H.) and Barbara Klein (Wednesday Mystery Man No. 1).

Barbara says: The man on the phone looks like R.H., who was uncredited, but not deleted. C.C.’s scenes were deleted, but man on phone doesn’t look like Mr. Cane. *confuzzled*

Barbara, so was I.

Here is a true mystery lady. I don’t recognize her and I’m not sure that she’s identified on imdb. She speaks a number of lines and has 20 seconds of screen time, but in those days, was not credited. Any ideas? (And I cropped out Back of the Head Guy, in case you are wondering).

If you would like a hint, email me.

And on the right…. Oh. Him.

Please congratulate Mary Mallory (mystery Doughboy No. 2), Dewey Webb (mystery Doughboys Nos. 2 and 3), Jenny M (mystery movie and cast), Julie Merholz (Wednesday’s mystery cop, mystery doughboys), LC (mystery movie and cast), Mike Hawks (mystery doughboys), Barbara Klein (mystery doughboys), ValleyDave (Wednesday’s mystery cop, Doughboys Nos. 2 and 3) and Don Danard (mystery Doughboys Nos. 2 and 3).

Barbara suggests our mystery woman might be Connie Russell.
