Jan. 27, 1863: As usual, this issue is mostly devoted to the Civil War. But the Star reports that the Rev. Pedro Verdaguer is taking up a collection to build the first church in San Bernardino.

    I am puzzled by the alleged lack of churches in San Bernardino in 1863. The plaque in front of the SB courthouse states that a colony of settlers including Mormons fought off Indian attacks at that location in 1851 or 1853 (I don’t recall exactly), and the Mormons would have built a temple.
