Dec. 23, 1937: The funeral of Ted Healy as reported by the Daily News.
Today’s installment was supposed to be a look at Jack Marcus, Ted Healy’s manager. Marcus picked up Healy and took him home after he was treated for the injuries he received and was present when he died. Marcus was the main spokesman to the press in the coverage of Healy’s death and the subsequent investigation.
But Marcus disappears from news reports after the Healy incident. There are a few later stories in The Times referring to men named Jack Marcus, but it’s unclear if any of them is the right one. There’s nothing further about him in Daily Variety, and neither Daily Variety, the New York Times or the Los Angeles Times published an obituary.
We do know that Marcus was one of Healy’s pallbearers, so he is in this photograph, which was published in the Daily News. Unfortunately, only two men, Frank Fay, front left, and Dick Powell, front right, are identified.

The 10749 Weyburn Avenue address supposedly is Joe Frisco’s home, while others say it was Healy’s house. It was built in 1935. How to find the original owner? A Los Angeles phone book from 1936?

The book Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkely says the pallbearers were Busby, Dick Powell, Eddie Mannix, Harry Rapf and Charles Reisner (pp 152-153). I wasn’t able to get to the footnotes of the book in Google Books so I don’t know the source for that info. Berkeley would I guess be the guy in the back on the left.

The newspapers provided two lists of pallbearers, one announced before the funeral and one from the funeral. They vary slightly. I have them in one of the many previous posts.

I think I clipped it out of the paper so it’s appearing as an image rather than text. I’ll check tomorrow to see if I can find it. Anyway, The Times published two lists, one when the funeral was announced and a second from the funeral. They are slightly different.

Well I at least have it in my notes: Pallbearers were Dick Powell, E.J. Mannix, Harry Rapf, Chuck Reisner, Bryan Foy, Frank Fay, Bill Grady and Jack Marcus.(LAT, Dec. 24, 1937)

It would certainly explain why none of the guys look like Busby Berkeley in that photo, though I assumed the one I couldn’t see much of (the one who looks like Milton Berle but isn’t) must have been Buzz. Thanks for posting the list!
