Movieland Mystery Photo (Updated +++)

Mystery Photo

And here’s a mystery chap for Monday. Note his interesting choice of headwear.

Update: Yes, this is “Riding High,” which is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen. Entire sequences (not just a shot here or there)  were picked up in big chunks from “Broadway Bill” and several of the actors — including Clarence Muse, Douglass Dumbrille and Ward Bond  — were brought back to add new footage. The time warp between 1934 and 1950 is staggering. If anyone knows of another movie where this was done, leave a note.

And here we have another mystery chap. My, that hat does look familiar.

Please congratulate William, Sarah and Rick Scott for identifying the movie and Don Danard, Mary Mallory, Mike Hawks, Jo Anne, Patrick, Dan Nather, Persika1946 and L. Girodo for identifying Monday’s mystery fellow.

… and here?

Please congratulate Patrick, Don Danard, Dewey Webb, Mike Hawks,  Herb Nichols, Karen, Sue, John Brooker, Dennis Gilliam and ValleDave for identifying our mystery film, and Mary Mallory and Rick Scott for identifying Wednesday’s mystery folks.

Dennis says: This film had practically every comic character actor in Hollywood, but the Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s other actor, look familiar, but still allude me.

Don says: Wednesday’s “Not Mystery Persons” are XXXX and the spectacularly unfunny XXXX. . So I guess the film is “XXX.”

    Delivering the Racing Form by pony express would certainly explain the newsboy cap… While I am guessing the fellow is a true life jockey, I do not know his face.

    Huh?….Clarence Muse in “Broadway Bill” was just featured in Mystery Photos. So this looks like the same movie except Muse has a different shirt on. I will make a wild guess this is the remake of the same movie done in 1950 Clarence Muse in “Riding High” (I should wait for more clues)

    Maybe this is an out-there guess, but is that Clarence Muse in the first photo? Maybe this is Riding High, the 1950 remake of Broadway Bill that starred Bing Crosby, but edited in footage from the first 1934 movie and then called back some of the same character actors from 1934 to do a couple of scenes here and there. Strange film.

  28. Wednesday’s photo of Oliver Hardy has lead me to the Bing Crosby’s 1950 horse race movie, Riding High, which would put Monday’s fellow as Clarence Muse. This film had practically every comic character actor in Hollywood, but the Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s other actor, look familiar, but still allude me.

    When Curly was replaced by Shemp, Columbia re-released some of The Three Stooges shorts, but they only reshot the scenes that Curly was in. The scenes that featured Moe and/or Larry were just lifted from the earlier film. As several years had elapsed, you see Moe and Larry age considerably from scene to scene. Sounds like Harry Cohn doesn’t it?

    If I’m not mistaken, no one got Tuesday’s mystery guy from either Broadway Bill or Riding High. So who is he?

      BTW: i do see Charles Lane in back of the younger Douglas Drumbille. Mr. Lane had one of the longest careers in the business. Sometimes he was only an extra, but his presence always added something special to any scene he was in.

    1934 to 1950? I have to see this picture! They Save Hitler’s Brain is really Madmen of Mandoras, shot in 1963, with twenty-some minutes of 1968 thrown in. Not sixteen years, but seeing the world of crew cuts suddenly intermix with long hair and sideburns (and a totally different film stock) is pretty glaring.

      “Riding High” is really bizarre when it comes to continuity because they intercut the new footage with Bing Crosby and the old stuff from “Broadway Bill.” It is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen.

        Another really strange picture – also with Warner Baxter – is ‘Stand Up and Cheer’. It is surreal, unintentionally. And a hoot to watch a guy run in and suddenly announce that ‘the Depression is over’!
