Here’s a bit of fun trivia from a little documentary that aired on TCM the other day. It’s an early version of the directional signs used by movie crews. And “TWT” stands for?

[Update: “TWT” stands for “They Went Thataway.” Since I’ve been in L.A., the signs for movie crews have gone from marker scrawled on poster board to professional signs printed on light plastic. Sometimes they use obvious initials (CSI:NY) or fanciful titles. “Bedford Falls” was quite the rage a few years ago. I don’t know what movie crews do in the rest of the civilized world but in L.A., they use these signs.]

While it may not be the actual meaning, in keeping with the movie theme i have to believe TWT means “They went thataway.”

The documentary was on the making of “Westward the Women.” I believe that the TWT sign was used for directions to The Wardrobe Tent.

I was a set decorator for thirty years in the NYC film industry and I never saw a sgn such as this. I can only guess To Wardrobe trailer…altho tent would work as well. Possibly; To Women’s toilet? Just guessing.

Most of the signs you see in Vancouver are either orange or pink directional arrows with no obvious reference to the title of the production

Bedford Falls is actually the name of a production company; they produced THIRTYSOMETHING, MY SO-CALLED LIFE, and other TV shows.

I’ve always wondered what these things were. They periodically pop up here in Albuquerque. And they’re also yellow with black letters.
