Mystery Photo
I was watching this movie the other night and thought: “Hey! Wait a minute. That’s…..”

The film shouldn’t be too hard to identify. But the location …  hmmmmmm. As I often say, living in Los Angeles is like living in a big movie set.  They film everywhere.

  1. Caine Mutiny on the quad in front of Royce Hall at UCLA. Spent many a pleasant hour watching the girls go by, feeling guilty about unfinished assignments.

I don’t know the name of this streamlined mic but they were used in early fifties television. Gene Norman used them on his KHJ-TV dance show when station was at Don Lee facility at 1313 N. Vine St. They were also used on musical shorts (I think they were called Tele-Transcriptions) that were similar to “soundies” Many pop artists were featured in these shorts which featured one song each, not unlike MTV. You can see them on YouTube–check out Teresa Brewer!

  5. The movie is “The Caine Mutiny” and the locale is UCLA in Westwood. The type of microphone is also featured in a Studio Telescription short of The King Cole Trio performing “Mona Lisa” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96ZA8m59Q18 and Capitol Records has the same type of microphone in its collection at The Capitol Tower Studios in Hollywood.

Robert Francis and May Wynn in “The Caine Mutiny.” No idea about the microphone but it doesn’t look like something that might have been used in WW II.

The young grad is Robert Francis so this looks like The Caine Mutiny, filmed in part at Royce Hall at UCLA per wikipedia. It’s tricky because USC has the same type of building.

I’m not so familar with LA that I could Identify the obvious college building. But I do recognize Robert Francis and assume the young lady is May Wynn(?) so the film would be Caine Mutiny Court Martial. Interesting in that I have never seen this film. I wonder why.Odd.
