Mary, you mention that Ned Sparks was born "outside of Ontario, Canada. That would have him born in another province 'cause if he wasn't born IN Ontario, then he'd have to have been born either in Quebec, to the east, or one of the western Provinces.
Whenever I see mention of these players, and I can hear Ned's voice now, I think of Irving Bacon (director Lloyd Bacon's brother) surely the most prolific of all supporting players. In Ned's case, he had established a specific type, almost a specific character, who would bring a predictable set of facial and tonal expressions to the work. They were legion. You mentioned several. Eugene Pallette, Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams, Edgar Kennedy, Maxie Rosenbloom come to mind. But I know of no one sporting more IMdB credits nor who was more ubiquitous from about 1925 on than Irving Bacon. He seems to have been everywhere including such as It Happened One Night, Gone with the Wind, Grapes of Wrath (36 films in 1939 but only 27 in 1940!), all the way up to The Dick Van Dyke Show. Unlike the others, Bacon mastered the ability of nearly disappearing into the scenery. Nice piece, always enjoy your stuff. Thanks.

Huh. I'm glad he "can order up pretty much anything I want online, any time" but nearly every day I run into something I simply cannot find online. If I do find something, usually it's a book that isn't online except in snippets in Google Books, or MAYBE something you can check out in OpenLibrary. You need libraries when dealing with print material. You just do. Even for stuff that was all online a few months ago; many of my links from just a few months ago no longer work, archive.org never archived the page, and I'm out of luck. This is especially true in the case of celebrities who scrape the web of PR mistakes. I got burned on that more than once, and now take screenshots of webpages when I find them. In a few cases, though, the web article that was edited or deleted was also in print, and if it wasn't for a library I couldn't get a copy.

I read the article and like you I was shocked.

My earliest memories are of the central downtown library in the early 1950s when we lived up on Bunker Hill (where the Water & Power Building now stands).

My brother and I treated it as our playground on weekends; and my parents appreciated it as a babysitter.

The sights, the sounds, the smell. Oh yes, and the books. "So many books, so little time."

The magic of that library enthralled my being and guided my life.

I visited it recently and it's changed with its computer rooms, CD/DVD rentals, but the core feeling is still there.

I can only pity Rosenblum for deprecating something he knows almost nothing about.

I have to agree with you, I have found so many errors in Wikipedia posts (which people should not use Wikipedia as a reliable source at all). Also, I have found errors in several well known books, (such as E.J. Fleming's book) any many others in regards to old Hollywood mysteries and scandals, that just seem to be fabricated information. Take one story that is close to my heart for instance- Dorothy Millette Bern. I have researched her story for years, I have written about her as well...and many books claim as fact that she murdered her husband Paul Bern. That is speculation, not fact. They also state as fact that M.G.M. and Jean Harlow paid for her funeral, burial and headstone, while that is actually incorrect, too. In fact, the "burying" basically putting her in a coffin and placed in the ground was directed by Mr. Silberberg (M.G.M.'s Attorney) to the Coroner with the request that they "bury her and send them the bill." However, although they paid for her to be put in the ground they did NOT pay for a funeral, or for her headstone or engraving...in fact Herman Koch (the public administrator) had to auction off Dorothy's effects that were found on the Delta King steam liner just to pay for a proper headstone and engraving. That is why Dorothy's headstone has an incorrect year of birth, because they could not track down any family members to know when she was really born. Census records released later prove her date of birth was actually 1895 not 1886. But that is just another prime example of misinformation being posted as fact in books and Wikipedia. I appreciate you taking the time to write such a thorough article about this story.
