Movieland Mystery Photo — Newsboy Cap Edition XIII (Updated + + +)

Oct. 14, 2013, Mystery Photo

I know, I know. I just did newsboy caps. But I couldn’t resist. Look: It’s an actual newsboy wearing a newsboy cap. I’ll bet you can guess the studio just from this crowd scene.

And here’s our thirsty mystery gent for Tuesday.

Even though this is a crowd scene, Dewey Webb, Gary Martin and Arye Michael Bender pegged the studio. Gary also identified the barest glimpse of our leading man in the background. Congrats!

And for Wednesday, a mystery woman.

Please congratulate Don Danard and David Inman for identifying Tuesday’s mystery gent.

Mary Mallory and Mike Hawks are correct on the studio and Mary and Lorenzo have identified our leading man, who is barely visible in Monday’s mystery picture. Interestingly enough, Mary and Gary Martin guessed the same movie — alas, wrong.

And for Thursday, we have a mystery woman and a mysterious companion.

Please congratulate Mary Mallory, Patrick and Gary Martin for identifying our mystery film and cast. Mike Hawks has identified Tuesday’s mystery woman.

And for Friday, a (totally not) mystery woman.

Please congratulate Mike Hawks, Don Danard and Barbara Klein for identifying our mystery movie and cast. Valle Dave has identified the studio and most of the cast. Thursday’s mystery guest(s) have been identified by Patrick, Mary Mallory, Julie Merholz and Patricia Ann.

  1. DeweyWebb says:

    Warner Bros.

  2. Gary Martin says:

    Could it be Warner Bros.?

  3. Gary Martin says:

Is that Edward G. Robinson smoking a cigar behind the Newsboy cap?

  4. Benito says:

The gent in the fedora sure looks like Milton Berle!

  5. Mary Mallory says:

Looks somewhat like roger Pryor and George E. Stone (with back to camera) at right.

  6. aryedirect says:

    Warner’s, but of course.

  7. Mary Mallory says:

Is it Jules Raucourt as the newspaper hawker? He was 9413, in the “Life and Death of Hollywood Extra 9413.”

  8. Mary Mallory says:

Edward G. Robinson in the crowd Monday. And I said that George E. Stone had his back to camera yesterday. Mike and I both think it’s a Warner’s film, but we weren’t going to send that without getting someone. Is it FIVE STAR FINAL?

  9. Don Danard says:

I’d have to say today’s Mystery Man is Russell Hopton.

  10. Lorenzo says:

Is that Edward G Robinson hiding behind the Monday’s newsboy?

  11. Gary Martin says:

Since it’s Tuesday I’m going to take a guess that this is Edward G Robinson in Five Star Final, 1930.

  12. Mary Mallory says:

I got it. Matty Roubert is the newspaper boy, all grown up from his days as a kid in the silents. It’s Shirley Grey today, and Russell Hopton yesterday, so must be LITTLE GIANT.

  13. Mike Hawks says:

Yes, it is Russell Hopton for tuesday. For the rest, we shall see.

  14. Patrick says:

Monday = Edward G. Robinson in the background. Tuesday = Russell Hopton and Wednesday = Shirley Grey. The film is “The Little Giant” from 1933.

  15. Gary Martin says:

Is the wednesday lady Shirley Grey?

  16. Gary Martin says:

I just saw the preview for Little Giant on the tmc website. It seems to be our mystery film…with edward g. and the gent from tuesday. The wednesday gal in the lacey bodice would be Helen Vinson.

  17. Mike Hawks says:

Our lady today is Helen Vinson, at left is Edward G. Robinson and the film LITTLE GIANT 1933.

  18. Jenny M says:

    Binnie Barnes?

  19. Don Danard says:

Today it’s Helen Vinson and Edward G. Robinson, who also shows up ‘way back there in bg in the Monday Mystery Photo. So the film is likely “The Little Giant” and the young lady sitting on the arm of the chair is likely Shirley Grey.

  20. ValleDave says:

The Studio is WB. Thursday: Eddie G. and Helen Vinson. Wednesday : Shirley Grey. Tuesday:
    could be Don Dillaway.

  21. Barbara Klein says:

“The Little Giant” with Russell Hopton (Tues), Shirley Grey (Wed), and Helen Vinson and Edward G. Robinson. (Thurs).

  22. Patrick says:

Thursday = Helen Vinson and the aforementioned Edward G. Robinson.

  23. Mary Mallory says:

    Helen Vinson and Eddie G.

  24. juliemerholz says:

    Edward G, Robinson

  25. Patricia Ann says:

Thursday’s man looks like Edward G. Robinson.

  26. Don Danard says:

Yes, by golly, that is Mary Astor isn’t it! (Was waiting for her to show up!)

  27. juliemerholz says:

The Little Giant with Mary Astor, Helen Vinson and Edward G.

  28. juliemerholz says:

    Russell Hopton on Tuesday.

  29. juliemerholz says:

    Shirley Grey on Wednesday.

  30. DeweyWebb says:

    Jewel Mayhew

  31. Gary Martin says:

Monday: Matty Roubert, the newsboy and Edward G Robinson in a puff of smoke behind him: Tuesday; Don Dillaway: Wednesday; Shirley Grey: Thursday; Helen Vinson and EGRobinson: Friday: Mary Astor and EGRobinson.

  32. Gary Martin says:

Whoops …The Little Giant, 1933 by Warner Bros. Not to be confused with Little Giant with Abbot and Costello.

  33. Mike Hawks says:

Mary Astor finally makes her appearance.

  34. herb nichols says:

warners studio ,eddie g robinson behind the news boy

  35. Patrick says:

Whatever Eddie’s dishing out, Mary Astor ain’t buying it.

  36. Barbara Klein says:

Must be Mary. Astor, that is. :-)

  37. LC says:

    The Little Giant
Edward G. Robinson, Mary Astor, Helen Vinson, Russell Hopton

  38. Bruce says:

The perils of search engines. I go to IMDb to look up “The Little Giant”; in particular, I’m interested in the reviews. The second item is

    http://www.epinions.com/review/Little_Giant_epi/content_518888394372?sb=1

A reasonable short review of the dvd is followed by “Related Deals You Might Like…”: all products (like ladders) whose name includes the phrase “little giant”! (Epinions.com is owned by EBAY.)
