And for Thursday, we have a fun-loving bunch of mystery guests!
Update: This is Lila Leeds being pawed by a bunch of newsmen in a gag photo for the Los Angeles Press Club. Please congratulate Steven Bibb for identifying her. The fellow on the right is the unfortunate Roby Heard, who was beaten to death with a hammer in 1960. The upskirt fellow is Nils Ljunquist, with, from left, Clark Roberts, Heber Smith, Larry Miller and Les Wagner.

I picked up this copy of the June 1950 “Eight Ball Final” at the Last Book Store. Here’s the cover, by Bob Moore, who is eulogized inside. In addition to stories and a two-page layout of drawings by Times artist Charles Owens, there are lots of wonderful photos.
Here’s a sampling:

Kippee Valez, Miss Eight Ball Final for 1950, in a photo that captures newspapering of that bygone era.

“Rolling?” by Perry Fowler of the Herald Express.

“Morgue Bound Mobster” by Bill Murphy of The Times.

Johnny Stompanato and Mickey Cohen, by Bob Hecht of the Examiner

Well, the gal is starlet Lila Leeds.
Is that Wally Cox on the far right?
