[Update: Please congratulate RJ, Floyd Thursby (are you our old pal Waldo Lydecker in disguise?), Eve Golden, Mary Mallory, Gregory Moore, Don Danard and Rick Scott for identifying our mystery chap!]
[Update+: Yes, this Francis Ford (c. 1923) except for one photo of Walter Brennan labeled as Francis Ford.]
There’s a new photo on the jump!

Nov. 4, 1923: The inventory of Francis Ford Studios, 6044 Sunset Blvd., for sale at auction.

6044 Sunset Blvd. via Google maps’ street view.

Sept. 6, 1953: Francis Ford dies.

[Update+: Francis Ford in "The Ox-Bow Incident" ]
[Update: Please congratulate Rance Ryan, Randy Skretvedt and Gary Martin for identifying our mystery fellow! ]

[Update: Francis Ford in an undated publicity photo.]
[Update: Mike Hawks, back from vacation, has identified our mystery chap!]

Our mystery fellow has a mystery fowling piece.
[Update: OK, this is obviously Walter Brennan in “My Darling Clementine,” – obvious except to the person who labeled the photo as our mystery chap. But both fellows have something in common.]

[Update: Francis Ford and Jane Withers, 1935. Please congratulate Mary Mallory, Don Danard, Dewey Webb, Lee Ann, Mike Hawks, Rick Scott for identifying Jane. Julie Merholz and Lee Ann also identified Francis Ford. ]
Our mystery chap gets some help with his makeup!

the actor Francis Ford, brother of John Ford
Francis Ford.
Francis Ford, yes?
Francis Ford, John Ford’s brother.
J.M. Kerrigan
Irving Thalberg made up to play the future Robert DeNiro?
That’s Francis Ford.
That’s John Ford’s older brother, Frank, aka Francis Ford.
He generally played the drunken old coot in his brother’s movies.
He’s great in “Young Mr. Lincoln”, “Drums Along the Mowhawk”,
“She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”, “The Quiet Man” and “The Sun
Shines Bright”, among many others.
A young Boris Karloff?
Looks like Francis Ford (John’s older brother)
Donald Crisp
Francis Ford damn
Francis Ford, well known actor-director in silents and elder brother of that upstart John Ford, who thanked his brother for getting him into the picture business by giving him the tiniest, most demeaning supporting roles possible in his movies.
Albert Sharpe
John’s brother Frances Ford.
It’s *not* Francis Ford?! It’s a dead ringer for him. Well, what I said about John Ford still goes. I can never enjoy his movies as much as I should because I know what a mean, cantankerous person he was.
Back from a short vacation, the man is Francis Ford.
Houseley Stevenson
In that last picture he looks a LOT like Huntley Gordon.
i think you got the last picture mixed up.the first three show a gentleman with very dark eyes, while the fourth picture looks like walter brennan with light eyes
The last picture when I posted my comment was the 3rd photo.
I know I suck at these, but let’s not start jumping on me about every little thing. Thanks, Herb.
Today’s photo is Walter Brennan.
That can’t be Walter Brennan…can it?
Francis Ford?
This man is Walter Brennan.
The “gentleman” with the fowling piece is Walter Brennan in, I think, “My Darling Clementine”.
There is a resemblance to Francis Ford however but Brennan had a terrific scowl.
Today’s picture IS Walter Brennan.
The Thursday photo looks like Walter Brennan as Pa Clanton in “My Darling Clementine” to me.
I’d like to see the caption on today’s photo, the one with the fowling piece. Those eyes look very different, more like Walter Brennan’s.
last picture Walter Brennan!
I agree with Herb. The latest picture is definitely Walter Brennan (there’s even a picture on Google Images of Brennan wearing the exact same costume). But the other 3 pictures look like a different guy.
I’m with Herb. Fourth picture is definitely Walter Brennan and not same fellow as in three earlier pictures at all. Gals in the morgue must have had a liquid lunch celebrating Mardel’s upcoming wedding or something.
I think the mystery guest is Francis Ford, John Ford’s brother and sparring partner. However, I agree with the other comments that the last fella is Walter Brennan, whose charisma entirely escapes me.
I still say picture #3 looks more like Houseley Stevenson than
Francis Ford.
Jane Withers does Francis’ makeup.
Isn’t that Jane Withers fiddling with Franci Ford’s makeup?
I wonder if she remembers this shot being taken.
Both Walter Brennan and Francis Ford were in My Darling Clementine.
Jane Withers, probably publicity shot from Paddy O’Day or This is the Life
Is today’s photo Jane Withers and John Ford? A nice representation of ham and cheese!
Oops! I meant FRANCIS Ford and Jane Withers!
This is Jane Withers with Francis. Since they made at least four movies together I cannot say which this may be.
I’ll jump on with everybody else on the Thursday picture…Walter Brennan from “My Darling Clementine.” Friday, I think that’s Jane Withers lending the helping hand.
